Crafting the Universe of Gog and Magog

An Exclusive Interview with Jimmy Champigneulle, Creative Technologist at HDOKI

In this exclusive interview, we sit down with Jimmy Champigneulle, the Creative Technologist at HDOKI, to delve into the development of the Gog and Magog game universe. Jimmy shares insights into his creative process, and how his dual expertise in technology and music helped shape the game.

What was your inspiration for the musical score of Gog and Magog? Did any particular genres or themes guide your creative process?

“For the composition of Gog and Magog, I focused on the idea of duality and confrontation that runs through the story. The legends of Gog and Magog evoke themes of the end times and upheaval, and I wanted the music to convey this tension between chaos and harmony, between destruction and hope.

The genres that influenced this soundtrack are primarily epic orchestral music, enriched by dark electronic textures. I was also inspired by ancient musical traditions to evoke a mystical and timeless atmosphere. This is reflected in harmonic choices that draw on Middle Eastern musical modes or ancient tonalities, creating a resonance with the mythological origins of these figures.

The overall goal of the music is to create an immersive soundscape by using instruments and soundscapes to evoke a powerful and evocative narrative.”

How did you approach creating distinct music for different game environments or characters within Gog and Magog?

“For Gog and Magog, each environment and character required a unique musical approach to reflect their identity and role in the story. My main goal was to create a distinct atmosphere for each location and character, using varied sound palettes while maintaining overall coherence within the game’s musical universe.

For the environments, I explored different sound textures. For example, darker or hostile areas are accompanied by deeper sounds and pulsing rhythms, while more mystical or enigmatic places use ethereal sound elements and dissonant melodies to enhance the supernatural aspect. I also used variations in tempos and instrumentation to distinguish between zones, creating sound contrasts that guide the player through the adventure.

As for the characters, I created musical themes that capture their essence. Some of the more imposing or mysterious characters are associated with repetitive and heavy motifs, while others, more agile or enigmatic, have lighter themes, played with plucked string instruments or synthesizers.”

You are also the Unity Head of Development, which is amazing as you combine both technical and creative skills. Why did you choose Unity, and where did your passion for video games come from?

“As a Team, we chose Unity for several reasons. First of all, it’s a very accessible engine that offers great flexibility while remaining powerful. It strikes a good balance between performance and creativity, making it an ideal tool for projects that are both ambitious and independent. Additionally, the community around Unity is very active, which makes learning and sharing best practices easier while staying at the cutting edge of new technologies.

As for my passion for video games, it goes back to my childhood. My father was a big video game enthusiast, and it was thanks to him that I discovered this fascinating world. He introduced me to classic games, and through them, I learned to appreciate the depth of virtual worlds, stories, and game mechanics. It was also a way for us to connect, spending hours together exploring imaginary universes. These memories deeply influenced my desire not only to play but also to create interactive experiences that captivate and inspire players.”
